Zwei prominente Anbieter von iPhone Applications, die gegenwärtig nur per Jailbreak auf dem iPhone installiert werden können unterstützen nun öffentlich die Bemühungen der EFF, den iPhone-Jailbreak in Einklang mit dem DMCA zu bringen und damit quasi zu legalisieren.
Der Anbieter von Firefox und Co, die Mozilla Corporation, hat sich dafür ausgesprochen, den iPhone-Jailbreak nicht als Copyright-Verletzung auszulegen. Computerworld zitiert den Mozilla CEO John Lilly wie folgt: “This is not us criticizing Apple, but it’s the principle of the thing. Choice is good for users, and choice shouldn’t be criminalized. The Internet is too important for all of us for that.”
Ähnliches lässt Skype Communications, Ebay-Tochter und weltweit größter VoiP Software-Anbieter verlauten: “Copyright law should not interfere with a user using his or her phone to run Skype and enjoy the benefits of low- or no-cost long-distance and international calling”
Diese Aussagen haben auch Cydia-Programmierer Jay Freeman dazu veranlasst, sich zu Wort zu melden. Er geht gegenwärtig davon aus, dass gut 1,6 Millionen Geräte weltweit mit einem Jailbreak und der Cydia-Applikation ausgestattet sind. 400.000 davon in den USA. [ad#Google Adsense 468*60 All Ads]
